We refuse to make a change because we see no reason to. The problem is that often in life the most dangerous of problems go unseen and there are many reasons to make a change. It is destroying intimacy. Yes, I know that at this current moment you may not be concerned with preserving the value of intimacy, but one day you may. One day you may hope to be married or in a very serious relationship in which sex is a display of honest love and true passion.

What is the meaning of sex? The answer lies somewhere in the way we integrate the biological imperatives with the emotional and experiential realities. Virginity is a social construct to the extent that we invest the state of virginity with social significance. Until recently, those who studied the rise of hookup culture had generally assumed that it was driven by men, and that women were reluctant participants, more interested in romance than in casual sexual encounters. But there is an increasing realization that young women are propelling it, too. But others, like Susan Patton, the Princeton alumna and mother who in March wrote a letter to The Daily Princetonian urging female undergraduates not to squander the chance to hunt for a husband on campus, say that de-emphasizing relationships in college works against women.

Keenly attuned to what might give them a competitive edge, especially in a time of unsure job prospects and a shaky economy, many of them approach college as a race to acquire credentials: Their time out of class is filled with club meetings, sports practice and community-service projects.

For some, the only time they truly feel off the clock is when they are drinking at a campus bar or at one of the fraternities that line Locust Walk, the main artery of campus. Given the choice between a society where women are publicly shamed for expressing their sexuality, and a permissive “hookup culture”, I’ll take the latter. I’m starting to wish it really did exist.

In this usage, a noun or pronoun can be used between “hook” and “up. I hope we’ll be able to hook up for coffee or something while you’re home for Christmas break. Do you guys ever plan to hook up after dating for so long? No, we never hooked up—we’re just friends. I heard Jenny hooked up with Brian. Did you two hook up yet? Not only is it the central focus, it has become the be-all and end-all of these social outings. This is not problematic in itself. A first-year student, for instance, talked about how even though she is in a relationship, the hook up culture makes her uncomfortable throughout the night as people couple off to hook up.

She feels uncertain about whether or not she has to take part too, even if she has a boyfriend. Why do I feel the pressure that if I want guy friends, I have to be a tease and flirt with them? I know we are all guilty of it.
